The Hunting Museum of Finland
The Hunting Museum of Finland was founded by the Finnish Hunters' Association in 1930. Although, the museum wasn't opened until 1972 in Porvoo. Into a new building, which was built by the city of Riihimäki, the museum moved in spring 1990. The Hunting Museum of Finland Association is responsible for the activities of the museum. Among the members of the association there are, for example, the national hunting organizations. The activities of the museum are financed mainly by means raised by game licences.
The basic exhibition of the museum presents a general view to the ten thousand-year-old history of finnish hunting - the period, during which hunting developed from means of earning one's living to a hobby. In this exhibition you can get acquainted with a camp of a Stone Age hunter, a hunt of wild reindeer, fur trade and sealing, among other things. The figures of hunters representing different ages and hunting forms tell you about the changes in the clothing and equipment in this century.
Also different kinds of hunting gears from the Stone Age to our days are displayed in the museum. The firearms from muzzleloaded flintlocks to the modern hunting weapons form an interesting whole of the exhibition. In the basic exhibition you can also get acquainted with hunting amulets. The most important game animals of Finland are displayed, too.
The function of the museum besides collecting, depositing, examining and displaying things related to hunting is to function also as a service institution and information center in this field. The collections, library, archives and photoarchives are at disposal of researchers.
